Go jump in a lake. I’ve always liked that expression. I know, I know — it’s a thing people say when they want you to leave them alone, when they want you to stop annoying them. Go fly a kite, go climb a tree, go jump in a lake.

I see that as sound advice. Show me a kite, I’ll fly it. Show me a tree, I’ll climb it. Show me a lake, and I will happily jump in.

And I’ll stay there a while. The point of flying a kite isn’t to reel it back in. The point of climbing a tree isn’t to scramble back down. And the point of jumping in a lake isn’t to return immediately to shore. The point is to enjoy the kite in the sky, the sway of the branches, the feel of the water.

Tell me to go jump in a lake, and I’ll cheerfully comply — and I’ll ask you to join me. C’mon, it’ll do you good.
