Night, with thistles

It’s not the thistles that I see first, it’s the night.

And though there is thistle-coloured light on the wall of the out of focus building, and in the thistle-stem colours of the lights from windows and street lamps, it’s still the night that I’m looking at.

The dusk, the dark, the light.

And then, only then, when I’ve taken in and savoured the night. Then I turn my attention to the thistles and see that they hold within their sepals and petals, their vascular stems – they hold the colours of the night.
