That summer we played in the fountain

Give me some joy please. It is both needy and arrogant of me, but each morning when I read the news, the world seems worse. So bring me childhood memories of a hot, drought year, wet feet slapping over cement slabs, gooey tar-bubbles popping on the pavement. Dredge up Sham 69 chanting “If the kids… are united… they will nevah… be divided.” Even bring those first wasp stings, soothed with the ultimate sweetness of a strawberry Mivvi. Show me a polaroid of happy kids splashing in a fountain; and consider that when those children are as old as us they’ll look back and think that this was a perfect summer.
