message from my mother

Autumn Roid Week is my favorite Polaroid season. All those bright autumnal colors combined with the inherent nostalgia that belongs both to the season and to the medium of instant film — it’s a recipe for brilliant imagery.

And yet to celebrate the beginning of Autumn Roid week I’ve picked a photograph that doesn’t have brilliant color, that doesn’t have a single fallen leaf, that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Autumn at all. But down at the bone, if Spring is always about saying Hello, then Autumn is always about saying Good-bye. And there are some people we spend our entire lives saying Good-bye to. Not because we can’t let them go, but because saying Good-bye reminds us of how very lucky we were to ever say Hello.

This is a very beautiful and moving Hello. I urge you to read the whole story.
