There are 401 orishas — manifestations of the God — and of these, the most important is Eleggua. He was first, and is the owner of roads and crossroads, of thresholds and doorways. It is through Eleggua that prayers reach the other orishas. He is the power that allows the ache in the universe to move from here to there, from there to here. Eleggua is the universal doorman, dressed in a frock coat, small trousers, and a red hat.

This door opens easily, that one does not open at all. Another opens after a struggle, or only after a series of arcane knocks. This is the way of it, the way of all of it, and you can never know what lies on the other side of a door until it’s opened.

You needn’t believe in Eleggua in his red hat to know the truth of that.
