This photograph makes me happy. A bicycle, waiting. A greenspace (it could hardly be called a ‘lawn’) that’s relaxed, basically tidy, and friendly. A house (or two, and possibly three) that’s got over its youthful issues and settled down comfortably. A bit of yellow paint — not too bright, not too yellow — a good-humored yellow that’s cheerful without being frivolous.

The composition gives an amiable nod to formality while remaining steadfastly casual. Like wearing a tweed sport coat with faded blue jeans. At heart, it’s an affectionate photograph. It’s a photograph you could meet at the pub for a drink and idle talk. Does it merit intense study? Yes, actually, it does. But it will yield more through a leisurely long-term, undemanding, companionable acquaintance.

You don’t study a friend. You enjoy their company.
