You have been busy, my friend said. And it’s true, I have been. You are not by nature a busy person, she said. And that’s true as well. You have told me on many occasions that you dislike being busy. And I have told her that, though I wouldn’t have thought ‘many occasions.’ There must be a reason for you to be so busy, she said. And there is. she’s right.

She hesitated, and I’m certain she wanted to ask me what that reason was. But she was discreet. She needn’t have been.

When will you stop being busy? she asked. Soon. I hope it will be soon. And then what will you do? Sit at a table, with my back to the wall, with a drink near to hand, with my eyes closed, with my shoes off, with my mind open and my mouth shut.

Will it have been worth it, whatever has kept you so busy? And I want to say yes and I want to say no because both are true, but neither really applies. I want to say I have been busy because it was required of me, and worth doesn’t figure into it. But I don’t say anything.

You will be glad not to be busy, my friend said. You are good at not being busy. And it’s true.
