Star Lindesnes

We may know this for fact: this is the Star Lindesnes, a general cargo ship, thirty-seven thousand gross tons, built in 2013 and registered under the flag of Norway. We may know the Star Lindesnes, whose home port is Bergen, is at present docked at Port Mellon, in British Columbia, northwest of Vancouver.

We may know those facts — but they’re facts we ignore. Because when we look at this photo, we’re not seeing the Star Lindesnes. We’re seeing an unnamed vessel docked at San Pedro in 1995. We’re seeing a ship chartered by a group of Argentinians who are transporting ninety-one million dollars worth of high grade cocaine. We’re seeing a ship that’s about to be boarded by desperate men: Dean Keaton, Todd Hockney, and No First Name McManus. Fred Fenster should have been there, but he mumbled himself into a lonely hand-dug grave on a beach somewhere. And there’s Verbal Kint, of course, but he’s apparently staying behind on the docks, waiting.

We can hear the sounds of a working harbour. Water lapping against the sides of ships, cables quietly clanging against metal, in the distance the sound of stevedores operating cranes, and the drone of forklifts and pallet jacks. We expect to hear gunfire, and screaming, and eventually an explosion. Instead we hear is a whispered voice — a soft, slithering, insinuating breath…

Keyser Soze.

And pffft, like that…he’s gone.
