Hi baby. Yes there you are, an ordinary but extraordinary human infant. How many billions of baby photographs are there in the world? Probably already hundreds, maybe even thousands of this very baby?
And yet still… Patrick stopped to photograph this one, and his photograph stopped me. I’m sitting in the dry-scented periodical room of a university library, a perfectly adult space. Each of us here is silent and isolated in a reading cage. How amazing that we all started out as one of those?
That naked little stranger framed by drapes and elevated like a performer alone on stage, he or she, guilelessly reaches out to me in the audience. An unprovoked moment that Patrick catches and many miles away I wonder is that baby waving or bashing? Whichever it is, it would be rude not to applaud.
