Last night I had a dream that I can barely remember, beyond the scattered impressions it left behind; and they are enough. I dreamed of long grasses, warm light, and a sense of mild, companionable fretting. I’d left my comfortable travel-seat behind, despite some elaborate plan to carry it along. But this petty concern readily gave way, because even in dreams, I like to walk unencumbered and rest on the ground, where I can reach for stones.

I remember the sound of water nearby, and a sense that I was looking for it. I anticipated hours spent idly examining its edges, looking for tiny lives and paths that cross.

Maybe spring will arrive early this time. I don’t believe it yet — and it is a lonely thing, sometimes, to love winter as I do — but I’m grateful for a new year on this earth. I will savor every moment that I can, in motion or at rest.
