I’m not one of those people who press you to look on the bright side every time. The sun might indeed come out tomorrow, sure, and we can choose to look for the light; as a rationalist, I must concede that these options exist.

But there’s much to love about shadow, too. There’s a certain comfort to be found in its depth; there is an emotional balance. There are times it feels right to pull back and gather our strength, at least for a while.

We contain multitudes in this messy, gorgeous life. We’re better off embracing it.
