Twilight

The Humber Estuary at twilight.

It’s a particular shade of blue, best viewed from the deck of the Hull to Rotterdam overnight ferry. Cerulean – a heavenly blue, see how it touches the finger of land and overpaints the sea.

There is a whoosh of sea against the prow of the boat. There is wind in your hair and a chill in your bones. There is the blue of the sea and the blue of the sky, painting the shoreline with twilight colours. The red and amber lights of a passing ship.

Glance through plate-glass windows at the happy tourists elbowing each other as they queue at the all-you-can-eat buffet, nibbling on a steak in the fining dining brasserie, or downing pints of Dutch lager in the bar while they wait for the cabaret. Inside there is laughter and music and dancing.

Outside there is the silence of twilight and the whooshing of cerulean seas prized apart for the Pride of Rotterdam to make its way home.
