Snow covered canoes

The first text message of the day came from another time zone “HOLY DAMN my legs are on fire, I just walked up and down hills for 3 hours, way too fast for comfort. Screw y’all for raising us to walk like we’re being pursued by a wolf.”

It was snowing and the wind was in his face but if he fully buttoned up his coat he’d boil like a Christmas ham. Some people just have to walk fast, even if they are walking only for the sake of walking.

“It’s good to move through a strange city as if one has a purpose.” he replied, and then his gloveless finger punched at the slippery screen “there probably are wolves hehheh”

When he got to the lakeshore there were six canoes tucked up together under the snow, like white pea-pods, like one of those early photographs of a whole family of prairie children all squished into one bed. Next to them was a rowing boat, right way up, the Poppa boat watching out for wolves. He walked on.
