Slap-bang, right in the middle of the picture is a small dark circle. It’s a gizmo, doohickey thingamajig. Woebegone buildings have such things. It is outlined with an iris of flaking grey cement, wrinkles trickle up and down the wall. Look up to the verticals of wooden planks, stretching skyward as if they remember being a forest. Look along to the stacked packed of horizontal stones, weighted, and waiting to one day crumble into sand.

But what we really want to look at is that pale face in the dark window. Wrinkles crease the velvet of that face and draw us right into the centre. Slap-bang, right in the middle of that window there is a small dark circle. Could it be a bulls-eye?
