Sewage Works

Sometimes the advantage of photography is that it only engages with one of the senses. Without the title this could this be just another brutalist structure. But there is a hint, a whiff, a stench of the sewer, now that we know what we know.

Those delicate lichens or mosses dotted over the concrete walls are feeding off fragments of sewage carried in the air, seeping in through the human made barrier.

But there is a beauty, a symmetry in the scene. All angles and straight lines, that’s true. Harsh sunlight and shadows for sure. But there are wild plants (weeds if you prefer) and mosses softening the hard edges, and blurring the lines of kerb and trackways.

There is beauty in the most brutal of places – you only need to seek it out.
