For many years the panda has been the flagship animal among cute endangered species, but the time has come to draw everyones attention to the sand cat (Felis margarita) sometimes known as the sand dune cat. Unlike the fussy “we’re on a strict bamboo diet” panda, the sand cat is obviously happy to live in sandy desert but will not turn up it’s delightful nose at a more stony terrain and will eat whatever’s available. They unpretentiously inhabit the abandoned burrows of foxes or porcupines. They are astonishingly cute and because of a high risk of respiratory infections need to live in hot, dry climates. They are found in the deserts of North Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East.
This is not one of those deserts, it looks to me more like the shrubland of Hotchkiss, Colorado, and that is not really a sand cat, but he is still cute… kinda.
