Being Together

Perhaps it began with moustaches. There was definitely a moment when we broke from the past. when people no longer wore frivolous hats, overnight the station guards and bus conductors vanished, and the only surviving moustaches became ironic. Here, in this picture, I see ghosts of that past, a hat which bridges practical and ornamental, a coat with entirely unnecessary epaulettes, a little gesture of togetherness.

Undoubtedly a woman can fix her own scarf, and we can only wonder if that particular woman found the man’s help affectionate or invasive, caring or patronizing. We can only imagine, if he turned around, would we see a moustache.
