Project 365 (2018) | 31 January

Fire drills at academic facilities so often become darkly competitive. Who can forget Mr Skinner (or Sinister Skinister as he was known to the kids) the middle school swim teacher who had a grade 7 class out of the pool and lined up in an icy January school yard in under three minutes. That class will doubtlessly bond over the memory at their twenty-five year school reunion.

Then there are the kindergarten teachers who oh so casually compare times, and console each other “Oh but you had to manage Vladimir who hides”, “yes, but you had the bathroom boys”. Then there’s Mr Samuels who promises to buy his class a pizza lunch if they get out fastest; but always seems to forget this when they do.

It is good to see a fire drill that looks as orderly as this one. Where participants wait calmly, like a single frame from a stop motion animation. Where Phillip has taken a split second to grab this picture, unworried by the time it adds to his exit speed.
