My dad once got stuck, spelunking, and needed to be rescued from a narrow cave. In the years since he has been prone to vivid and animated dreams, he escapes from Somalian pirates, lectures Ukranian salesmen, scores a try against England at Cardiff Arms Park; but oddly, he never has caving dreams. Some places are too dark for the subconscious mind.

I suppose we all think of ourselves as the descendants of cavemen; but not from caves such as these. This picture tells a story. Every child understands that for eons caves were a place of protection from the elements outside, but still the child runs. No one wants to be last out, no one wants to be left behind, alone. The darkness of the night sky feels like infinity, while the darkness of the sheltering cave feels like fear.
