Glory be to God for dappled things.’ I don’t believe in god, but I have to agree with Gerard Manley Hopkins here. I am smitten by all things dappled.

Even the term itself delights me. Dappled. There’s some uncertainty about its origin, but it’s fairly clear the term took root through dapple-grey — the mottled color of a grey horse that, even in bright day, looks as if it were standing in the leaf-filtered light of a shady tree.

I don’t believe in god, but I very much believe in joy. And there’s immense joy to be found in a world in which a thing can be best defined by a word describing the interplay of light and shadow randomly distributed by the leaves of a tree.
