Goat

There was a goat on the table.

The people came to Moses and said, “A goat on the table, what does it mean?” And Moses saw the goat and said, “It is in the nature of goats to climb, and in our nature to be patient and generous.” And so he put a basket of fruit on the ground and the goat left the table to eat of the fruit, and all was right with the world.

The people came to Jesus and said, “There is a goat on the table; what shall we do?” And Jesus saw the goat and said, “Are we not shepherds? Let us care for all goats as if they were ours.” And so he held out a ripe fruit and let the goat taste of it, and the goat came down off the table, and all was right.

The people came to Mohammed and said, “Behold, on the table, a goat. What is our duty?” And the Prophet looked on the goat and said, “If Allah wills a goat to be on the table, the goat will be on the table. May Allah guide us and give us wisdom.” And a passing merchant offered him fruit, which enticed the goat down from the table, and all was right.

The people came to the Buddha and said, “There is a goat on the table.” And the Buddha saw the goat and laughed. He plucked fruit from a nearby tree and climbed onto the table with the goat and they shared the fruit, and all was right.

There is always a goat, and it is always on the table. The rest is up to us.
