You’re probably looking at this photograph and asking yourself, “Is this surrealism? Or is it absurdist art?” These are valid questions.
Surrealism, of course, aims for the liberation of the mind by emphasizing the critical and imaginative powers of the subconscious, whereas absurdist art holds that the universe is chaotic and irrational and that any attempt to impose order on it will ultimately fail, so just go along with it.
The problem is that although those are valid questions, they lead to the wrong answers. Is this surrealism? Is this absurdist art? No. This is Florida, where surrealism and absurdity lose all meaning. Florida exists so other states can consider themselves to be normal. And that is both surreal and absurd.
