They are showing Fritz Lang’s Metropolis in a cinema near here, with live orchestral accompaniment. We saw it advertised on the U-Bahn. We have only recently started using the U-Bahn again and I am not sure that I feel ready to sit in a cinema; but this is the film to make me consider it. A film which is almost a hundred years old and has left an indisputably powerful mark. You see it referenced here in this photograph, in the swirling illogical lines of concrete and asphalt, in the vehicles which almost appear afloat. Yes, in 2021 the cars do still touch the ground, but this was the film that most closely predicted  soaring American mega cities; only our saviour never materialised, and folks got rerouted from rising up in revolution into making monthly car payments.
