It is probably rude to look in windows.

I say probably because windows are there and sometimes you look in them — it can’t be helped — and I want to give myself (and you) some leeway to look in windows.

We look in windows because they show us other worlds and other lives, worlds and lives that aren’t our own, but are sometimes similar to our own. Sometimes we see other beings looking out of those windows, and for a brief moment we form a metaphysical Venn diagram in which our world and our life overlaps the other world and the other lives.

Sometimes that’s a good thing. Sometimes it isn’t. Worlds and lives are like that.
