Jay is clearly inspired by colour. Some of her most striking and inspiring shots feature gorgeous saturation and involve curious colour wheel juxtapositions.

It's a surprise then to glimpse her muted moody photographs that speak of the quieter emotional side of things. Her conceptual work and her still lifes are as impressionistic as they are photographic, and suggest to me that it is compassion that provides the focus in Jay's work.

But that sounds so very serious, and that really doesn't describe what she's up to. Whether it's a string of sausages hung in a window, or the secret life of pears, Jay's images have a lot of humour to them, and demonstrate that there's as much going on behind her camera as in front of it.
