The Church at the Milford Exit

Robin Gornell

If you're driving west of Omaha on I-80, you're bound to pass this church. I have gone by so many times, and so many times wanted to stop and photograph it. It sits on private property now, so you have to stop on the exit ramp and pull off, run across some grass and through some trees, and voila! There it is. In all it's ruinous glory. And as usual I picture this place without the interstate, without cars, trucks, and semis, and wonder what it was like in the days it was originally built. How many people came here to worship? To gather as a community? To wed? To be baptised? To be buried? And, as usual, my wonderment floats away on a warm Nebraska breeze....
