Then and Now

Kim Hodgson

I have been driving over the bridge on the right for more than 50 years. I'm not sure I ever noticed the bridge on the left until a week or so ago. It crosses the South Fork of Peachtree Creek directly above a dam which dates back at least to 1900, when Major Washington Jackson Houston built DeKalb County's first hydroelectric plant on this site. Before that, Major Houston ran a popular grist mill on this site. Now it is part of a system of trails and nature preserves that Emory University has created from the old Lullwater property, which includes the old Candler Estate which now serves as the President's house. This site is accessible from the Hahn Woods parking area, the entrance to which is visible in the upper right hand corner of the photo.
