Russell station sunset

Kim Denise

Russell station, on the shore of Lake Ontario in the Town of Greece, NY, was built in 1948 and burned coal until it was shut down in 2008. Now they are demolishing the structure and remediating the site.

I was a little late with my camera cellphone; both smokestacks were still standing just two days ago. I've always thought it rather beautiful, especially since it stopped spewing coal smoke and fly ash into the sky.
