take-out

Liz West

I have enjoyed Chinese food my whole life. When I was a kid, few ethnic restaurants existed in the United States outside of major cities. Those that did were mainly Italian or Chinese. Chinese food is often traditional among Jewish families for several reasons: first, Chinese cooks seldom use dairy products, so it's easy for kosher families to avoid mixing meat and dairy products; second, Chinese restaurants are open on all the major Christian holidays. Our home was only a half hour from New York's Chinatown, so I was well-acquainted with many types of Chinese food before I came to Massachusetts. For years, I pouted because I could find only Cantonese style here. Boy, has that changed!
