We never had "bought" mint sauce when I was a child. It was my job to make it for Sunday lunch. First pick a bunch of fresh mint from the garden, chop it up.
We put a teaspoonful of white sugar in the bottom of a glass milk jug and poured hot water on to dissolve it. In went the mint, and malt vinegar (I couldn't tell you the quantity but I can remember the level in the jug (searching back more than 50 years in my memory)

We never had "bought" anything - my mother did everything from scratch. Apart from some of my dad's treats like battenburg cake and fig rolls.
