Yes, the dog is the "something broken." After noticing a steep decline in her activity over the last six months, I took her to the vet to find out that she has progressive nerve degeneration in the rear part of her body. In short, the signals from her brain are not reaching their intended destinations like they once did. I guess one could argue that entropy is all around us and therefore "broken" might not be an appropriate term to use. But in this particular case I find it fitting in that before finding out about her condition, her time left loping around this weird spinning ball was still open ended. Now that we know about her condition and based on its progression, her time has become tangibly finite in a way that seems fitting to describe her as "broken." You can see it in her hesitancy to climb the three steps leading to the front door of the house, steps that before were nothing but a breeze. Now she stumbles from time to time. I'm using those stairs as a benchmark. When it gets to the point where she can no longer get up those steps without help on a regular basis, I'll know what comes next. Fourteen years is pretty good for this kind of dog.
