Recreation or Necessity?

Liz West

I love words and have always enjoyed Scrabble. When my kids were young, I developed a handicapping system so that we could play together and both have fun. Kids don't like it if they know that an adult let them win, and I didn't enjoy playing if I couldn't actually put down words. So we worked out a system. At one point, someone warned me that future Scrabble pieces would be made of plastic instead of wood, so I stocked up on games at yard sales and flea markets. I don't know if that ever happened, but anyone playing here plays with wood. As I write this, I am involved in three different online Scrabble games. One is with my daughter, Jessamyn, who loves words as much as I do. It's always fun to see what she puts down.
