evening

Rachel Irving

One evening, maybe a week after J first had symptoms, there was a power outage. J and Lol both saved everything they'd been working on; he picked up a guitar and started playing, she came downstairs and joined us. A&G played cards for a while, then one of them suggested reading aloud. They got out the copy of Ronan Farrow's "Catch and Kill" and the three kids passed it around, taking turns to read a chapter; and as it got darker we found flashlights and lit candles, and Lol said it was like a scene from Jane Austen. They kept reading even after the power came back on. A few days later they decided to have another "reading Farrow" evening. So we opened some wine and felt fury at the patriarchy. I think Ms Austen would have understood.
