foraging

Rachel Irving

I didn’t think we had been preparing for lockdown but by early March our store cupboard was strangely full. I had been gradually adding cans and buying bigger sacks of dried goods since January. It was an instinct. As time passed and we had to self quarantine, as the usual grocery delivery services got booked out weeks ahead, we spent increasing amounts of time finding better ways than Amazon and Walmart to supplement our stores. The kids found a nuts and treats company; a recommendation from their oldest elementary school friend. The owner of a local coffee shop dropped us freshly roasted beans when they walked their dog. We ordered a mixed box of deliciousness from a variety of businesses in Little India. Friends who worked in restaurants showed us the website of a wholesale supplier who had set up home delivery. All these businesses are struggling. The whole global food supply chain is toppling like dominos.
