morning

Rachel Irving

On Friday 13th March I was standing in a muddy schoolyard along with hundreds of children, in a moment of silence I looked up and saw a V of Canada geese. Returning geese is how you know that Winter is officially ending. It was the last day of school. I miss noisy child voices. The whole city is quieter, even at night. I sleep later most days. Instead of starting by going down the road for a morning espresso I grind some beans and make drip coffee at home. Before lockdown Lol said I used to look like Baby Yoda as I clutched a tiny espresso cup on a cold winter day. It was my daily Yoda moment, a time for gratitude, a meditation on the path that the coffee had taken from planting to drinking, a time for poorly structured sentences. Leaving the house made it much more of a ritual.
