jellyfish

Ard Hesselink

In 1988, while still living in Amsterdam, we bought a small but fully furnished vacation home in Egmond, right by the dunes. It had been built by a widow from the old 'Jordaan' area of Amsterdam and was filled with bric-a-brac, kitsch and typically Jordanese fake French provincial and Louis XVI furniture.

Needless to say we soon redid the interior and moved in our own kind of stuff. One of the few things we kept was this lamp, hanging over the diningroom table. Sara, then no more than 4, 5 years old called it the jellyfish and that more than appropriate name stuck.

We loved the area, spent virtually all weekends there and in the end (1991) it led to moving into the area completely. After a while we sold the vacation home (to famous Dutch ex-DoeMaar leadsinger Henny Vrienten), again in fully furnished state. It was silly to hang on to the house since we could now bike from our permanent home to the same dunes and beaches...

But the jellyfish we kept and hung over our new diningroom table. First in Castricum and then, ten years later, in Alkmaar where we still live. It was and is witness to many pleasant and delicious dinner parties, holiday feasts, etc. and has become a precious and indispensable part of the household!
