Empty Room

Rachel Irving

In fact it's rather full from this angle.

Sometimes I worry that I'll turn into that Mom from "American Beauty" who wanted everyone to appreciate her rose bushes and listen to Mantivani at suppertime.

This wall is all about me, my deathmask and my grandfather's, artwork by friends and family, spoons carved by one uncle or another, a scrap of embroidery found in the bottom of a bag of jumble from my Mamgu, a portrait Grace did of me when she was two. On the back wall to the right, the painting of clothes that I found on the sidewalk in San Francisco, elsewhere a shell from Ocean Beach. a carving that I bought when I went away with my travelling s-i-l, a mask that was my godmothers. J's work room has his personality, the kids' rooms have theirs, I hope I'm not a tyrant.

The rest of the room is quite bare.

For the Utata Project on Home.

BTW We didn't choose that colour, but in it's favour it makes a good background for portraits and red furniture.
