Keilaranta waterfront on a calm night

Robert Harper

When you are out driving at night there is always something different to see, and tonight while driving alone the West highway out of Helsinki I noticed that there was not a breath of wind on the night air.

As a result of this the sea was completely calm and the reflections of the buildings at Keilaranta were almost perfectly mirrored on the water.

The highway was deserted. Nobody was walking on the footpath by the shore. If this had been in the Med there would have been the sound of insects or frogs, but being Finland all was quiet.

I set up the camera to take this photo, resting it on the railing of the footpath when all of a sudden those five notes from close encounters of a third kind blared across the water and that middle building shot straight up into the sky and completely disappeared. The roar was deafening
