Most people of a certain age will recognize the darning egg on the right. Darning socks was once part of a thrifty life. You could buy darning yarn in many different colors, and it was not a hard task to master. Good darners--those who had deft, nimble fingers--created tidy smooth patches where holes once appeared; the rest of us created slightly bumpy patches that you felt forever.
