Placescape: Pave it Black

I see pedestrian space I want to it pave it black
No shade trees anymore I want it all paved black
(apologies to the Rolling Stones)

Atchison, KS recently removed shade trees, awnings, and a pedestrian mall to allow folks to park a little closer to one of a store's two entrances. One block of the mall survives because two of the town's most successful businesses occupy space where the street would have to go. At the time of this photo streets were still cordoned off in preparation for a "grand" opening ceremony.

This bronze sculpture depicts Deafy Boular, who laid many of the original brick sidewalks and streets in town.
