Chairs at the Cafe Du Monde

Meera Sethi

The Café Du Monde is a New Orleans institution and we spent an incredibly relaxed afternoon there our first day, sprawled in these green chairs in a haze from the heat and the enormous meal we'd just had (so there wasn't yet room for beignets, but we came back for them the next morning). I cannot remember the last time I felt so at ease and so careless of the world I'd left behind in Boston.

It reminded me a great deal of Singapore, what with the milky coffee, ceiling fans, open eating space, and the half-dozen or so Cantonese-speaking women in little paper hats who served us. It was glorious.
