Peel away the layers

Robert Harper

The most difficult part of making this photo was to produce the spiral of orange peel. I cut the peel very carefully with a knife and then pierced the top part with a needle and thread and tied a knot so I could lift the peel upwards.

I then used GIMP and the path tool to isolate the orange image, which had to be flipped horizontally to get the lighting correct and then adjusted by -4 degrees to get it positioned correctly on top of my head. The smudge tool was used to blur the sharp edges between the orange and the skin, then the whole photo darkened for a bit of atmosphere.
