Spalted Driftwood

Tom Benedict

The weather really wasn't great for KAP or for big, sweeping landscapes. The volcanoes have been pumping out too much SO2, and the air has been opaque for months. So the only good photographs I took during this trip to Waipio Valley were closeups.

I made an arrangement of driftwood, sand, and rock, and found out later I utterly blew the exposure, using the wrong film, the wrong exposure time, etc. While I'd been doing this, however, my daughter had found a beautiful piece of spalted driftwood, along with some ironwood seed pods. She made a really attractive arrangement, and the wind helped settle the sand after she'd finished. What you see is her work, not mine.

I'm glad one of them turned out. That it was hers and not mine is fine by me.
