Browsing 1000 Families

John Baucher

What a brilliant idea.
German photographer Uwe Ommer has spent 4 years travelling over 250,000 km to 130 countries to photograph 1251 families to produce an exhibition 1000 Families.
I walked into the grounds of City Hall to see a selection of these on display.
The photograph here is from Mali and the family are sitting in the Tougouna (Council Hut) where men gather to talk. The roof is built deliberately low to stop the men standing up too quickly preventing fits of anger caused by"excessively lively discussion", the idea being that because you can't stand up quickly it has a calming effect.
Now it occurred to me that possibly thon ones up at Stormont could do with one of these :-)
Seriously tho this is a beautifully simple idea and i for one will be back to visit it. Apparently it's here for a couple of weeks. Do yourselves a favour and get down to see it, its a joy.
