Spring Subjunctive

Linus Gelber

Subjunctive mood: that form of a verb which expresses the action or state not as a fact, but only as a conception of the mind still contingent and dependent.

Yesterday was a gorgeous, flat-out brilliant spring day. Which makes, lessee, I think two of them since March. Today? Autumn again, down into the 40s tonight.

I make it to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for the annual cherry tree blossoming a couple of days before the official Sakura Matsuri weekend celebration launches. I like to dodge the crowds where I can, and the weather forecast threatens weekend rain. The sun is fleeting and intermittent, and now and then a chill falls across the meadow. But O, these flowers.
