Self-Portrait with Sandbags

Linus Gelber

On Wednesday - Halloween Day - I walked in to the office to check for hazards and to see if I could get enough emergency power to run the mail server for a few minutes (no). Downtown was almost completely blacked out, still and quiet, with city workers laboring to repair and pump and reconnect and salvage.

I just got word this morning that power is back on at last in our district, so it's time for another brisk trip across the Brooklyn Bridge. Most of downtown Manhattan was back on line as of last night, although the extent of the damage in some of the outlying areas - Coney Island and Staten Island, for two - is just becoming clear. Bit by bit, the city eases back into its bruised spots.
