Prelude to a hike

Ken Lunders

The weather forecast said it was going to be another hot day in the valley so we decided to go hiking out closer to the ocean, in Big Basin State Park: California's first. Owing to the holiday weekend, and imagined crowding in the park, we left early in the morning to secure a place to park the car. To our delight, we ran into fog as we drove over the crest of the coast range along Highway 9. A good sign.
