tw482 | Mehlinger Heide

Martin Suess

We walked another section of the "Rätselhafte Zeitzeichen" hiking path that day. We didn't see any mysterious signs of the time, but passed a jewish graveyard (which was a surprise) and walked over the Mehlinger heathland. It is the largest heath in southern Germany. Other than the heathlands in northern Germany it is quite young: The community of Mehlingen had to pass the land to the German military in 1912 to create a military training ground. All trees were cut down -- and the area became a heath. Later the German Wehrmacht used the area from 1937 on, and after the war french and US troups. 1992 /1994 it was given back to Germany, it is a nature reserve now.
