Whitby Psych - Bldg 12

Rick Harris

Whitby was home to a wonderful urban exploration site, the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. It was decommissioned some time ago. But in it's time it served as a troop hospital for WWI soldiers. It was transformed into a psychiatric hospital after the war. Wonderful turn-of-the-century architecture.

This place is well documented among flickr-ers:

Sadly, only 2 buildings remain (BLDG 12 and 22). The rest demolished to make room for development. It's a sad thing because the buildings were beautiful and a great place to explore!

My daughter and I celebrated summer solstice by strolling the grounds. She's an urban explorer at heart. She once ventured down to these buildings to explore them before they were razed. She got to see the recreation building. Interesting fact: Girl Interrupted was partially filmed in the recreation building (the bowling alley).
