Time and Tide

Seldon Scott

Morecambe's latest public artwork, 'The Time and Tide Bell' by Marcus Vergette. It's one of a series of bells installed at various locations on the coast of the UK. The bell rings at high tide, the frequency and pattern of the chimes changing as the sea level rises. To quote the Morecambe Artists Colony who helped raise funds for the installation, "Each bell has been installed by the local community, to create, celebrate, and reinforce connections; between different parts of the country, between the land and the sea, between ourselves, our history, and our environment."

Personally I'm especially intrigued by the way it will mark rising sea levels caused by climate change. "Never send to know for whom the bell tolls" said John Donne. This bell tolls for us all.
